Carol Bellamy, President and CEO of World Learning and former director of both the Peace Corps and UNICEF, joined the Glimpse Foundation and its top-level supporters to help celebrate Glimpse's five years as a pioneering nonprofit in the fields of international education and cross-cultural exchange.

(PRWeb) January 4, 2007 -- On Wednesday Dec. 13, 2006, the Glimpse Foundation celebrated its fifth birthday at the Century Club in New York City. Carol Bellamy, President and CEO of World Learning, served as the headline speaker at the event, drawing from her extensive professional experience to stress the vital importance of Glimpse's mission. As a 501(c)3, the Glimpse Foundation aims to foster cross-cultural understanding and exchange, particularly between the United States and the rest of the world, by providing forums for young adults to share their experiences living abroad.

Before taking on her current position at World Learning -- a leading institution in the field of international education -- Bellamy served as former director of the Peace Corps and former executive director of UNICEF. During her 10 years at UNICEF, she fought against child exploitation, advocating for health, protection and education as basic rights for every child.

Bellamy intimately understands the global challenges we face today, as well as the need for increased global awareness in all sectors of society. To a gathering of 35 of Glimpse's top-level donors and supporters, Bellamy insisted, "Glimpse is making a difference."

The Glimpse Foundation was established by Brown University students in November 2001 and began full-time production in May 2002, with generous seed funds from the National Geographic Society. In pursuit of its mission, Glimpse publishes a website (GlimpseAbroad.org) and a print magazine (Glimpse Quarterly), which feature first-person narratives written by study abroad students and international volunteers.

Glimpse Quarterly is primarily distributed through colleges and universities across the country, with a current circulation of 15,000 and a projected readership of 20,000. GlimpseAbroad.org, a gathering space for study abroad students and other young travelers, offers a database of over 550 articles from almost 100 countries, as well as "Ask the Expert" peer-to-peer communication features, a growing library of blog posts and a PDF guide series about living and studying abroad.

The Glimpse Foundation's fifth birthday event celebrated the nonprofit's accomplishments to date and stressed the need to take Glimpse to the next level, which principally involves expanding its staff and broadening its reach. Among the many prominent guests in attendance were Rick Macarthur, publisher of Harper's Magazine and Bill Fitzhugh, director of the Arctic Study Center at the Smithsonian.
