Palo Alto, CA (PRWeb) January 5, 2007 -- School districts, charter schools, and distance learning programs have chosen MathScore to raise student math proficiency. MathScore has been selected by schools in Texas, California, Florida, Minnesota, Washington, and Michigan, to name a few, as one of the only math practice programs available that improves math proficiency from second grade through eighth grade and beyond.

Fifth grade students at Bishop Elementary School in Sunnyvale, California were the first to test MathScore in preparation for the 2005 California Standardized Testing and Reporting Program (STAR). After logging into MathScore once a week for 50 minutes, this class of fifth graders outscored the other fifth grade classes in the school by 50 percent on the 2005 STAR test.

"After the success students experienced with MathScore at Bishop, all of our schools were eager to gain access," said Claire Castagna, Assistant Superintendent of the Sunnyvale School District. "We have students logging on during weekends and after school to work on math tailored to their individual levels. We're very excited about the potential for mastery of skills as well as for acceleration."

MathScore developer Steven Yang attributes the success of the Bishop students to a renewed focus on basic math skills. "We enable students to focus on a mathematical concept until they master it. This approach allows each student to establish a solid foundation by building upon success after success."

Once the foundation is laid, students have a greater chance of being successful at more advanced mathematical reasoning. MathScore students, like the ones at Bishop, have demonstrated their improved critical thinking skills by scoring substantially higher on those portions of the California STAR that assess critical thinking.

MathScore works because it taps into each student's innate competitive nature. After signing into their individual accounts, students race against time to complete a set of problems generated by the program and tailored to their skill level. Students are motivated to beat their own best score. By the end of the year, a student will have completed more than 10,000 math problems, with every problem bringing them a step closer to proficiency.
