Google, making the list for the first time leaped to the top, ranking first. Nine hospitals made the list including Houston based Methodist Health System at number 9 and Mayo Clinic at number 62. Griffin is one of the smallest company on this year's list in terms of number of employees. The list includes such corporate giants as American Express, Nike, Microsoft and Nordstrom. Competition to get on the list has intensified. This year 446 companies vied for a slot, up from 161 in 1998. The 446 finalists were selected from 1,500 applicants. Eighteen companies have remained on the list since it was launched ten years ago.

Renowned for its patient service, Griffin has hosted visits from more than 580 other hospitals hoping to learn how it does it. Employees rave about the caring atmosphere and the
"Griffin's commitment is to not only provide an exceptional experience for our patients, but also to provide a great environment for our care givers", said Patrick Charmel, Griffin President and CEO. "Griffin is humbled and proud to continue to be in the company of these employers, recognized by their employees for creating an exceptional workplace. The FORTUNE list is the gold standard for the nation's best employers and sets the benchmark for others. I am pleased to see more hospitals appear on this year's list than ever before, indicating that there is growing recognition that hospital care givers have pride in the work they do and find their work rewarding," Charmel said.

"The 100 Best Companies to Work For" list is compiled for FORTUNE by the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco, based on two criteria: an evaluation of the policies and culture of each company, and the opinions of the company's employees. The latter is given more weight; two-thirds of the total score comes from employee responses to a 57-question survey which goes to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees from each company. More than 100,000 employees from the 446 finalist companies participated in the survey this year. It asks about things such as attitudes towards management, job satisfaction, and camaraderie within the organization. The remaining one-third of the score is based on an evaluation of each company's demographic makeup, pay and benefits programs, and culture.
