Aquarion Water Company Gears Up to Celebrate Its Sesquicentennial

2007 Marks Company's 150th Year of Providing Quality Drinking Water

Bridgeport, CT (PRWeb) January 11, 2007 -- The year was 1857. Horse-drawn wagons were the preferred mode of transportation, residents received their drinking water in casks from nearby springs and lakes, and on June 26th, The Bridgeport Hydraulic Company was incorporated.

Now that 2007 is here, the company will commemorate a milestone in corporate longevity. "Celebrating our 150th year anniversary signifies a wonderful, exciting and remarkable accomplishment," said Charles V. Firlotte, President and Chief Executive Officer of Aquarion. Firlotte noted that the key to the company's accomplishment isn't a mystery. "The utility that is now known as Aquarion Water Company was founded and operated to improve the quality of life for area residents by providing them with great water service. That basic principal remains the key to our existence, as we embrace the principles of continuous improvement each day," he said.

Beginning as The Bridgeport Hydraulic Company, and subsequently renamed Bridgeport Hydraulic Company, BHC, and Aquarion Water Company, the utility has seen many changes throughout the years. There was a time when horse-drawn carriages transferred holed-out wooden logs that would later be used to carry water from the reservoir into the public water system. Today, company reservoirs alone hold more than 30 billion gallons of water.

In 2007, Aquarion will complete a $50 million upgrade to the Stamford Water Treatment Plant and related infrastructure improvements -- it will be among several facilities that feature the most advanced water treatment technology available.

As well, 2007 will usher in a variety of opportunities to celebrate Aquarion Water's accomplishments and legacy during its landmark anniversary, thanks to the company's dedicated 150th Anniversary Celebration Committee team. The group members are: New Hampshire and Massachusetts Senior Vice President of Operations Larry L. Bingaman, Water Quality & Water Environmental Management Administrator Lynn Siegler, CEO Executive Assistant Georgeanne Berg, Supply Operations Administrator Linda Murphy, Acting Supervisor/Collections Representative Mae Myers, Water Quality, Cross Connections and Environmental Management Director John Herlihy, Education Coordinator Jennifer Bernheim, Public Relations Specialist Jeff Berman, Corporate Communications Director Adrienne Vaughan, Director of Business Improvement Jeff Farrell, Human Resources Generalist Marcy Spieler, Water Quality Field Technician Brody Wargo and Control System Specialist Dan Malanca.

Bingaman said, "Celebrating our 150th year anniversary is not only a wonderful and exciting corporate milestone, but an accomplishment that needs to be acknowledged all-year-round."

Aquarion will host a scholarship essay contest for high school seniors in its service areas and a water-related T-shirt design competition for middle school youngsters, among other activities. Plans are also underway to celebrate the opening of new environmental trails.

Aquarion Company's principal business is public water supply. Through its Aquarion Water Company subsidiaries, it is one of the 10 largest investor-owned water utilities in the U.S., serving 221,000 homes and businesses, or approximately 714,000 people, in 52 Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire communities. Aquarion Water Company of Connecticut provides high-quality water to 176,000 customers, or more than 600,000 people, in 36 cities and towns.
