As southeast Wisconsin homeowners prepare for winter with fall home improvements, Professional Plumbers and Contractors (PPC) is reminding residents to winterize their plumbing fixtures at the same time they take care of their windows, doors and furnaces.

Milwaukee (PRWEB) October 18, 2007 -- As southeast Wisconsin homeowners prepare for winter with fall home improvements, Professional Plumbers and Contractors (PPC) is reminding residents to winterize their plumbing fixtures at the same time they take care of their windows, doors and furnaces. The Milwaukee organization representing Milwaukee Union plumbers and plumbing contractors is offering simple plumbing winterizing tips on its website, www.ppcplumbers.com, to protect homeowners from frozen pipes, leaky faucets and other plumbing problems associated with freezing weather.

Among the winterizing plumbing tips, Milwaukee’s PPC recommends homeowners:

  • Disconnect any water hoses, splitters or timers from the hose bib or outdoor water faucet. If the faucet is not a frost-free hose bib, turn off the water valve inside the home and open the outside faucet to make sure the water is completely drained.
  • Caulk any air gaps or openings around water faucets.
  • Make sure the sump pump discharge hose is pitched at a downward angle away from the home so it can’t trap any water and freeze.
In addition to the fall home improvement tips, the Milwaukee PPC’s winterizing tips includes plumbing advice on what to do when temperatures drop below zero for an extended period of time. Homeowners can also receive a free Main Water Valve Tag that helps residents quickly identify the main valve that feeds water into the home. The laminated valve tag, which attaches to the shut-off valve with a reinforced zip tie, makes it easy for homeowners to find the valve in the event of a water emergency. Homeowners can request a free valve tag at http://www.ppcplumbers.com/free_water_valve_tag.php.
