The professor and painter Osvaldo Reyes passes away Sunday December 23rd after suffering a stroke in Toronto, Canada

Toronto, Ontario (PRWEB) December 28, 2007 -- The professor and painter Osvaldo Reyes passed away Sunday, December 23, after suffering a stroke in Toronto, Canada.

His funeral will take place Thursday, Dec. 27 at 10 a.m. in Toronto, Canada where he will be buried at the Glenview Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

In Santiago, Chile, a memorial service will take place on Wednesday January 2, at 7:30 p.m. This service will be held at the Chapel of the Saint Gaspar College located on Suarez Mujica 2577, Nunoa. The priest Alfonzo Baeza will preside.

Osvaldo Reyes was born in Santiago, Chile. He exhibited his work in Chile, Mexico and Canada.

In Mexico, he studied art with the great Mexican muralists David Alfaro Siqueiros, Diego Rivera, Federico Cantu, Francisco de la Maza, Jose Gutierrez and Raul Anguiano. He was also assistant to the Nobel Award winner Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral. In his return to Chile he painted the mural "La Ronda", which was inspired by the work of Gabriela Mistral of the same name.

He was a professor and director of the Escuela Experimental Artistica until September, 1973. This institution is renowned for producing hundreds of Chilean artists in a wide variety of artistic disciplines. In 1978 he moved to Mexico with his family, where he worked at the San Carlos Academy of Art for ten years.

In 1988 he moved to Toronto, Canada where he continued his life as a painter working mostly with oil and canvas and India ink. His work has been permanently exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) as well as York University.

Osvaldo Reyes maintained close contact with his native country. In 2003 he presented a retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago, Chile.

The renowned Mexican muralist Raul Anguiano commented in 1987 that Osvaldo Reyes' work can be placed "among the latinamerican masters such as Guayasamin, Amelia Perez o Portinari, with a modernist touch that resembles the work of Leger and other German expressionists."

Osvaldo Reyes passed away at the Scarborough General Hospital in Toronto, where he was hospitalized since Sunday, December 16th after suffering a stroke. He was accompanied by his family.
