"BANNED" at the Biennial

Local Austin artists come together at the second Texas Biennial happening March 1st - April 15th, 2007 in Austin, Texas. An interview with featured artist, Devon Grey.

Austin, TX (PRWEB) March 4, 2007 - Venice, Sao Paulo, Paris, Kassel, Sydney. The big names in Biennials have some competition on their hands as more and more cities introduce their every-other-year art spectacular. One of the most recent to join their ranks: Austin, Texas.

The Texas Biennial was born in 2005, focusing on bringing new local talent to larger than ever crowds. Their second offering is poised to solidify their mission, "To develop and promote the many talented artists that live in Texas." The Texas Biennial is taking place March 1st through April 15th, 2007 at four different venues located in downtown Austin:

The Dougherty Art Center
Bolm Studios
Okay Mountain
Site 1808 (a grassy meadow by Café Azul)

One of the artists featured at Okay Mountain, Devon Grey, recently relocated to Austin from Ontario, Canada. Devon's submission, 'Banned' is a video compilation of previously sanctioned commercials, video segments and tv shows that have been removed from the airwaves due to their war-time racial bigotry, sexuality and generally inappropriate content, at least, by today's standards.

When asked why and how this project came together, Grey said, "I came across various video segments on the internet and marveled at how buried they were. When I watched them, I quickly realized why they were banned. I thought maybe we could learn something from them, so I dusted them off, threw them together and the results are mind-boggling. I'm thrilled that the Texas Biennial thought so too."

You can catch Devon Grey at Okay Mountain on the evening of March 2nd, from 7:00 - 10:00 pm CST during the Biennial's opening reception, or on the web at www.DevonGrey.com. For more information on the Texas Biennial, go to http://www.texasbiennial.com/.
