Many people are keeping their debts a secret from their partners, The Debt Counsellors Annual UK Debt Survey 2007 has revealed.

(PRWeb) March 5, 2007 -- Many people are keeping their debts a secret from their partners, The Debt Counsellors Annual UK Debt Survey 2007 has revealed.

Debt help experts The Debt Counsellors compiled the survey by polling people seeking help for their debts, and the results show that a significant percentage of debt sufferers are keeping their worries to themselves.

Nobody should feel ashamed about their debts as so many people are in the same boat. At the very least, people suffering with debt problems should talk to a professional debt counsellor to find out about the various debt solutions that are available.
Over 22% of married respondents to the survey had not told their spouse about their debts, and of those living with someone, as many as 27% had kept their debt problems a secret from their partner.

Out of everyone polled for the survey, 24% said they had told absolutely no-one about their debt problems and 21% said they had no intention of telling anyone.

Despite many people remaining secretive about their financial troubles, personal debt is a widespread problem in the UK: the nation's total is up to around £1.28 trillion and increasing by approximately £1 million every four minutes.

John Porter, a senior counsellor for The Debt Counsellors, believes it is important that people are open about their debts in order to deal with the situation head-on.

Porter said: "Nobody should feel ashamed about their debts as so many people are in the same boat. At the very least, people suffering with debt problems should talk to a professional debt counsellor to find out about the various debt solutions that are available."
