Domain Name Resale Market Grows to $111 Million in 2006

Average Domain Name Sale Up 13% to US$5,582

(PRWeb) March 6, 2007 -- Domain name research and appraisal services firm Zetetic reports that the domain name aftermarket broke the $100 million mark in 2006, reaching US$111,376,000 across 17,974 domain name sales.

"Everyone knew this was a record year for the industry, and these numbers confirm that across the board," Zetetic Senior Analyst Keith Pieper said. "It continues to be a sellers market."

The average domain name resale price grew by 13 percent, from US$4,954 in 2005 to US$5,582 in 2006. The appreciation average increased over the 2004 to 2005 period where it was at 10 percent.

Zetetic also reveals that five transactions broke the US$1 million dollar mark in 2006, relative to one in 2005 (see Top Sales Records http://www.zetetic.com/domain-name-sales.html).

"Overall, only 0.7 percent of all sales break the US$100,000 mark, much less one million," Pieper said. "Most domain owners continue to exhibit 'irrational exuberance' asking high prices for names that do not deserve a premium. However, when the market is this robust, sellers can shoot high with some degree of confidence."

Zetetic's historical aftermarket sales database now accounts for nearly 34,000 transactions since 2003 amounting to more than US$272 million in sales.
