The Doe Run Company (www.doerun.com) today announced that the area near its Herculaneum, Mo., facility met the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for lead during the first quarter of 2007, according to data collected by Doe Run from the air monitoring stations located in Herculaneum.

St. Louis (PRWeb) April 9, 2007 -- The Doe Run Company today announced that the area near its Herculaneum, Mo., facility met the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for lead during the first quarter of 2007, according to data collected by Doe Run from the air monitoring stations located in Herculaneum.

First quarter data collected by Doe Run from the 10 air monitors in Herculaneum ranged from 0.2 to 1.4 micrograms of lead per cubic meter of air, placing the smelter within the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-specified air quality standard of 1.5 micrograms of lead per cubic meter of air (averaged over a calendar quarter).

This is good news for the company and our neighbors
"This is good news for the company and our neighbors," said Gary Hughes, general manager of the Herculaneum operation.

The company is awaiting the Missouri Air Commission's approval of the State Implementation Plan (SIP) consent order proposed by MDNR. The SIP is a process used throughout the United States to improve air quality and help achieve federal air standards - in this case, for lead.

In the meantime, Doe Run has proactively implemented many of the engineering and administrative controls proposed in the SIP, including:

  • Modification to the ventilation systems to improve dust-capturing efficiency
  • Installation of automated baghouse malfunction alerts
  • Upgraded control of air injection into the blast furnace
  • Installation of improved bags in baghouse
  • Implementation of bag-cleaning technology to improve dust-capturing efficiency
  • Wheel tunnel enclosure and ventilation system
There are approximately 60 engineering and administrative control measures proposed in the
SIP. For a complete project listing, visit
