In Time for Earth Day: GreenDimes Heads to Canada

GreenDimes -- a leader among socially conscious consumer lifestyle companies -- announces the expansion of their membership services to Canada.

Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) April 18, 2007 -- As North Americans, we will receive 4 million tons of junk mail this year, almost half of which will go directly to the garbage.

So this Earth Day, GreenDimes -- a leader among socially conscious consumer lifestyle companies -- announces the expansion of their membership services to Canada. Since the U.S. launch in September, 250 thousand pounds of junk mail have already been stopped and 140 thousand trees have been planted or saved around the world. With the latest addition to its services, GreenDimes is thrilled to help Canadians reduce much of the 13 billion pieces of junk mail that they receive in their mailboxes annually and to plant even more trees on behalf of their members.

GreenDimes was founded on the idea that we can each do small things every day that will collectively make a big difference for our planet. Each year, Americans throw enough junk mail away to fill 450,000 garbage trucks (which, if parked back to back, would extend from Phoenix to Kansas City). This is also enough paper to deforest the entire Rocky Mountain National Park. A hundred million trees are chopped down annually to produce the 62 billion pieces of unsolicited paper that end up in American mailboxes and subsequently, their wastebaskets. And there is the $320 million it takes to then dispose of all that mail.

Now, more than ever, North Americans can rest assured that there are good people out there doing something to stop this. For just ten cents a day, the GreenDimes staff is researching thousands of catalog publishers and dozens of direct mail companies throughout North America, contacting them on members' behalf and making sure that members' names get off and stay off of these lists. This $36 annual fee clears members' mailboxes, plants trees in their name and helps makes every day an Earth Day.
