San Francisco is the most humane city in America, according to a study by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and released today. According to the survey, The San Francisco metro area (San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont) is twice as humane as the average large metropolitan area. San Francisco took the top ranking in three of the 12 categories and was in the top ten in seven others.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 30, 2007 -- San Francisco is the most humane city in America, according to a study carried out by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and released today. Seattle came in second and Portland third. According to the survey, The San Francisco metro area (San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont) is twice as humane as the average large metropolitan area.
Wayne Pacelle, HSUS President and CEO, said that in its survey, the Humane Index, HSUS had ranked the 25 largest metropolitan areas, according to criteria such as the number of vegetarian restaurants per capita, and Congressional leadership on animal issues. San Francisco took the top ranking in three of the 12 categories and was in the top ten in seven others. San Francisco won with a combined "low" score of 76, compared with a total of 101 by the runner-up.
Representatives from HSUS, San Francisco Department of Animal Care & Control (SF/ACC) and The SF/SPCA will hold a press conference on Monday, April 30 at 11:30 a.m. in SF/ACC Park, at Harrison and 15th Street.
SF/SPCA President Jan McHugh-Smith said today that the attainment of the number one position was a testament to years of dedicated work by the animal welfare organizations and the citizens of the metropolitan area. "It takes a community to reach this level of achievement," she noted, "It's a success that belongs to everyone in the area who works for the betterment of animals' lives."
The Humane Index is HSUS' first attempt to compare how communities across the nation measure up in terms of the treatment of animals. West coast cities generally performed better than other areas with San Diego and Los Angeles ranked fifth and sixth respectively.
