In Yesterday, a Couple Shares Their Memories of Growing Up in Chicago, the "Windy City," with its Patchwork of Ethnic Neighborhoods

June's family was from the Emerald Isle while John's family came from Slovenia--and raising their own family in St. Petersburg on the west central coast of Florida.

Chicago, IL and St. Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) July 20, 2007 -- In Yesterday, a couple shares their memories of growing up in Chicago, the "Windy City," with its patchwork of ethnic neighborhoods--June's family was from the Emerald Isle while John's family came from Slovenia--and raising their own family in St. Petersburg on the west central coast of Florida.

Author John Steven Layner writes, "How often have you heard one say 'don't live in the past...live for the future.' Perhaps because I am in the sunset of my life, I live on the 'one day at a time' premise and treasure my yesterdays. Call it reminiscing, whatever, it is beautiful…"

What started out as a brief record of what it was like to live and raise a family in days gone by, quickly turned into a major undertaking and a delightful story. Yesterday is a deeply moving personal narrative, a gift to John and June Layner's children and grandchildren, and a treasure for the rest of us.

"Little did we realize that 'yesterday' was so very full of interesting reports," says John. "There are so many reasons why we have put our thoughts in writing. Perhaps the greatest reason is what we called our love song some 43 years ago--'Because of You.' Parents have the ability and responsibility to share and teach what they know."

Yesterday is full of good memories and reminiscences, sprinkled with heartfelt and inspiring quotes and family recipes that reach back generations, showing how a family's heritage can be experienced each night at the dinner table. "More than a string of words," says John, "we have found that in quoting others, it better expresses our feelings. And after our own moms and dads passed away, we wished that we had saved more of their recipes and traditions. That's why we wanted to include these as well," to be enjoyed, shared, and passed on.

John and June's book is a beautiful tribute of what it means to be a family, a reminder to cherish what you have, and honor the traditions you were raised with.
