Actress Susan Sarandon and Actor/Rapper Mos Def have agreed to lend their names as Honorary Co-Chairs to the 4th annual Children's Sports & Fitness Expo, which will take place on Saturday, September 29, 2007. The Expo was created to combat childhood obesity by engaging children in over 25 sports activities and nutrition classes.

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 23, 2007 -- Actress Susan Sarandon and Actor/Rapper Mos Def have agreed to lend their names as Honorary Co-Chairs to the 4th annual Children's Sports & Fitness Expo, which will take place on Saturday, September 29, 2007. The Expo was created to combat childhood obesity by engaging children in over 25 sports activities and nutrition classes.

According to the New York City Department of Health, 43% of New York City school children are either overweight or obese. To combat this problem, Vincent Ferguson, president and founder of Body Sculpt of New York, Inc., a not-for-profit health and fitness organization, created the Children's Sports & Fitness Expo.

The Children's Sports & Fitness Expo is a tri-state event that introduces children to over 25 sports activities, nutrition classes and health screenings - free of charge. Through this annual event, families can gain exposure to activities, programs and services that will help them to become more physically fit, thereby reducing the risk of obesity in their lives.

"I am delighted to host the 4th annual Children's Sports & Fitness Expo in New York City. Each year, the event gets bigger and better. This year we are very excited about Actress Susan Sarandon and Actor/Rapper Mos Def lending their names as Honorary Co-Chairs to the event. With their support, we hope to bring more attention to the fact that one in 3 children born since 2000 will get diabetes and according to the New England Journal of Medicine, children will lose 3 to5 years off of their lives because of obesity. This is a call to action," states Ferguson.

The 4th annual Children's Sports & Fitness Expo will take place on Saturday, September 29, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the 369th Harlem Armory Center and Minisink Townhouse located at West 142nd Street between 5th and Lenox Avenues. Over 40 fitness instructors will donate their time to instruct children in golf, tennis, fencing, gymnastics, soccer, boxing, martial arts, dance, yoga, baseball, basketball and much more.

After independently financing the Children's Sports & Fitness Expo for the past 3 years predominantly with his own funds, Mr. Ferguson has been instrumental in securing limited financial support from a few socially conscious companies. Given the previous years' attendance, Mr. Ferguson expects at least 5,000 children and parents to attend this year's event, which will ultimately raise the cost to produce the event. Mr. Ferguson is currently seeking additional financing as well as community partners who would like to join his efforts in combating the childhood obesity epidemic. The Children's Sports and Fitness Expo already has a proven track record of being able to serve as a worthwhile intervention that can contribute to behavior modification and increased awareness about the importance of regular physical activity.

U.S. Navy veteran Vincent Ferguson, is also a certified personal trainer and author of SIX WEEKS TO A SIX PACK and the recently published GET READY! GET SET! GET FIT! A Guide to Developing Youth Fitness.

Body Sculpt of New York, Inc., is an organization whose purpose is to educate parents and children about childhood obesity and offer healthy lifestyle alternatives in fitness and nutrition.
