The Whip Bar & Grill offers tasty treat to nourish Long Trail preservation.
Stowe, VT (PRWEB) July 28, 2007 -- It might look like your typical sandwich: fresh roasted turkey, baked ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, Vermont cheddar cheese, and mayonnaise, all strategically placed on top of homemade honey oatmeal bread. But fans of The Green Mountain Inn's Whip Bar & Grill know there's more to a sandwich than two slices of bread and the fixings. The Whip's famous Green Mountain Club sandwich is the result of a philanthropic mission started by owner and entrepreneur, Marvin Gameroff, still going strong today.
While alive, Gameroff shared his love of the outdoors with not only his two sons, David and Simon, but also with his customers. Gameroff, an avid hiker and passionate outdoorsman, was so impressed with the work performed by the Green Mountain Club (GMC), maintaining and protecting the Long Trail, that he dedicated a sandwich, the Green Mountain Club, in their honor.
"Marvin was a character," said Ben Rose, Executive Director of the Green Mountain Club. "He loved the Long Trail. For years he invited GMC caretakers down from Mt. Mansfield to his home in Stowe for gourmet lunches that he lovingly prepared."
But his family's support went much further. In 1992, Marvin's sons made a substantial donation to the GMC in honor of their father's 65th birthday. In addition, David and Simon began a new program that year, which allows restaurant guests to support GMC with a percentage of sales on the popular Green Mountain Club sandwich. Guests dining at The Whip have been choosing this incredible sandwich for nearly 15 years, allowing hundreds of dollars each year to be donated to the Green Mountain Club.
"I worked side-by-side with Marvin for over 10 years, and I know he truly believed in supporting local organizations with an ongoing effort," said Patti Clark, Innkeeper of the Green Mountain Inn. "He wanted to know that he didn't just help GMC once, but for many years to come."
The Inn's continued financial support has enabled GMC to create the Marvin B. Gameroff Hiker Center within their current headquarters and hiking center on Route 100 in Stowe. "It is ironic that the Green Mountain Club Sandwich is the one which benefits the club, because Marvin Gameroff was a strict vegetarian," said Rose. "We miss him, but appreciate his legacy of continued support for the Long Trail from Green Mountain Inn."
