Zeptile.com Introduces Social Networking to the Web 2.0

Typically, the only thing connecting users' personal pages in a social network are those ethereal ties known as "hyperlinks." Zeptile.com gives its users a more tangible connection.

Garden Grove, CA (PRWEB) Aug 2, 2007 -- Zeptile.com (http://www.zeptile.com) is redefining the way users are linked in a social networking Web site.

Sometimes, in the world of technology, all that is needed to breathe new life into an old product is to give it a new, innovative user interface (UI). Recent notable examples can be seen in the worlds of cell phones and mp3 players. Arguably, a large part of the Web 2.0 revolution involves making similar adjustments to existing ideas on the Web. Developer of Zeptile.com, Don Lee, believes that social networking Web sites are ready for their Web 2.0 UI face-lift.

You have your large image, the Social Networking Mosaic, which is made up of millions of smaller user images, the Zeptiles. So now, I can tell my friends that I'm at the Zeptile located at 143.234 (an example Zeptile coordinate), or I can say 'go to the right hand of the girl throwing the flowers in the mosaic, then zoom in. You'll see me there.'
"The Internet and social networking are a perfect match. Both are about making the world smaller," said Lee. "But I think the way social networking sites have been structured up until now has worked against that small-world-effect, in a way. Yes, I'm connected to my friends via links in my Friends List, but 'where' are their pages, really? Somewhere in cyberspace, I suppose."

Zeptiles.com's solution is to make each of the users' personal spaces into "physical" pieces of a larger whole. Instead of having a Web page, each user has a Zeptile(TM), a personal section of real estate on a social networking mosaic.

"We've all seen those large, mosaic images that are made up of thousands of smaller images. That's the concept behind Zeptile.com," stated Lee. "You have your large image, the Social Networking Mosaic, which is made up of millions of smaller user images, the Zeptiles. So now, I can tell my friends that I'm at the Zeptile located at 143.234 (an example Zeptile coordinate), or I can say 'go to the right hand of the girl throwing the flowers in the mosaic, then zoom in. You'll see me there.'"

The Web site provides controls for panning over, zooming into, and jumping around the mosaic, making for a more fluid navigation experience. The information that a user can display in his Zeptile is kept simple: one image, one quote, and links to the user's Web pages on other sites.

"Our goal is not to attempt to replace other social networking Web sites by providing all the same services that they provide," Lee said. "Instead, we hope that users allow their Zeptiles to act as a unified gateway to all their other pages, such as their online photo albums and blogs. That's not to say that we do not have big plans to add other new features, however."
