Leading mesothelioma attorneys comment on experimental mesothelioma treatment

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 30, 2007 -- New York's Columbia Presbyterian Hospital is hosting a mesothelioma clinical trial to determine if oxaliplatin plus gemcitabine, an experimental mesothelioma treatment, constitutes a viable first or second-line defense for patients who have been diagnosed with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma or malignant pleural mesothelioma. Physicians conducting this study with mesothelioma tests will seek to examine the rate at which tumors respond to this chemotherapy regimen. Researchers in this clinical trial for mesothelioma will also look to ascertain what the overall survival rate is for this course of treatment.

To receive this experimental mesothelioma treatment through this clinical trial, patients must not have undergone more than one additional form of chemotherapy treatment. If a patient has had a pleurodesis performed, than a two week interval must be observed between the performance of that procedure and participation in this mesothelioma clinical trial in New York. In addition, patients who are still capable of reproduction must agree to use an approved method of contraception for the length of the study as well as for three months following the cessation of one's participation in it.

In the United States, asbestos is the only confirmed cause of mesothelioma. Typically, mesothelioma shows up at least fifteen years after a person's initial exposure to asbestos. Asbestos can cause mesothelioma even when the exposure occurs for a brief amount of time. Asbestos fibers are tiny and exposure can occur without an individual being aware of it. Mesothelioma tests have proven that the disease is known to occur not only in the people working directly with asbestos products but also in bystanders or family member who were exposed to asbestos dust. http://www.nynjmesothelioma.com/traditional-mesothelioma-treatment.php"; [Experiments for treating mesothelioma provide hope and foresight into effectively treating the disease, however at this time asbestos is the only known cause of mesothelioma, a fatal cancer that occurs primarily in the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma) and the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma).

Attorneys at LPK have prosecuted mesothelioma lawsuits on behalf of plaintiffs in the New York and New Jersey area, as well as nationwide, during the past three decades.
