Minneapolis Spanish Language School Helps Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with updated Fall Spanish Class Sessions at its Edina, MN Location
Edina, MN (PRWEB) September 19, 2007 -- The Twin Cities’ center for Spanish language and culture, the Spanish Institute, celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a new schedule of Spanish language courses offered to Twin Cities residents.
Since 1988, September and October commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month in the U.S., making it a great time to dive into activities that celebrate the contributions of Americans with Hispanic descent. One in eight adults can claim Hispanic heritage, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, with the Spanish language continually growing in usage and popularity across the U.S. and the Twin Cities.
For the experience of the language the Spanish Institute in Edina invites local adults interested in learning Spanish language and culture -- in a relaxed, professional environment -- to register now for upcoming fall classes. New 10-week classes run September 24 through November 30, 2007.
“Our students don’t lack opportunity to use their language skills,” states Jose Abascal, founder and director of the Spanish Institute. “Even the beginners feel confident, after just a few sessions, contributing to conversations at work or participating in local activities where Spanish is spoken. We teach using the immersion method, which enables students to become proficient and learn the language in a very practical way.”
“Between the Mexican Independence Day Celebration on Lake Street, the upcoming exhibit of artist Frida Kahlo’s work, and even Hispanic Heritage activities at most local libraries, the Twin Cities offer many opportunities this fall to get involved firsthand in the traditions and heritage that the Spanish language offers,” explains Abascal. “It’s the perfect time to study Spanish.”
He adds, “And, because our instructors come from Peru, Mexico, Spain, or other native-speaking environments, they share an invaluable perspective with students that makes the cultural heritage of the Spanish language come alive.”
New classes start the week of September 24, and Abascal encourages anyone interested to contact the Spanish Institute and take a free placement exam, which quickly identifies the best course for each individual’s skill level. U.S. Hispanic Heritage observances began in 1968 as a commemorative week, and expanded to a month-long Hispanic Heritage Month in 1988, which now runs annually from September 15 to October 15. September 15 marks the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.
