In response to this need, Ocean Master Sportfishing Boats has launched the Ocean Skiff 27 Center Console with super fuel efficient diesel power. The standard configuration features a diesel engine mated to I/O drive to provide amazing fuel economy and long range.
Recent testing of an Ocean Skiff 27 outfitted for a European search and rescue agency yielded 9.7 mpg for an average day of use. This is a tremendous increase in efficiency over traditional outboard powered center consoles which often get just 1-2 mpg or less. The fuel savings can be dramatic - a whole day of fishing can be done on less than $30 of diesel fuel.
While this increased fuel economy will be immediately appreciated by the owner, another benefit is longer range on a single tank. This increases the area that a fisherman can cover in search of offshore fish such as marlin, swordfish, tuna and dolphin. The Ocean Skiff 27 diesel holds 150-gallons of fuel, yielding a range of over 1,100 miles with an adequate safety reserve. Long fishing runs to the offshore canyons or Caribbean islands are now within easy reach. Engines options include 250-hp and 320-hp diesels, with a 350-hp option available in early 2008.
The boat is based on the Ocean Master 27 hull that has been in production for a number of years. It is a proven design that is seaworthy, safe and ideally suited to sport fishing. The center console layout provides 360-degree fishability, absolutely critical to serious anglers.
