(Vocus) August 25, 2008-- This fall, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is introducing a certificate in patternmaking to respond to the industry's needs for the most highly trained patternmakers.

Geared toward fashion designers and patternmakers seeking to advance their patternmaking abilities, the program consists of five sequential courses in patternmaking, construction techniques, and fitting. The courses, totaling 14.5 credits, are offered over three semesters in the evening and on weekends to accommodate the needs of working professionals.

"This is one of the most unique programs of its kind in the United States," said Robert Vassalotti, FIT's acting coordinator. "Courses are taught by highly qualified faculty with industry experience. They give students hands-on training in specific core skills, along with insider tips hard to find in a book or video on the subject." Foundation skills are addressed, as are industry requirements for the preparation of patterns used for producing garments in the U.S. and abroad.

The curriculum includes such topics as developing body templates from specifications; creating patterns in various styles from these templates; applying muslin templates to mannequins; and adjusting production patterns on screen.

For more information on the Patternmaking certificate program at FIT, contact Rebecca Barrett in the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at (212) 217-4606. For further press information, contact the Office of Communications and External Relations at (212) 217-4700.

The School of Continuing and Professional Studies at FIT offers credit and noncredit courses and certificates to those interested in obtaining a professional certificate; taking courses in business, design, or art; or receiving specific industry training. It is also possible to obtain an associate's or baccalaureate degree through evening and weekend study.

The Fashion Institute of Technology (www.fitnyc.edu) is a selective college of art and design, business and technology of the State University of New York (SUNY), with 43 majors leading to the AAS, BFA, BS, MA, and MPS degrees. The college serves more than 10,000 students in such diverse areas as fashion design, advertising and marketing communications, toy design, home products development, and fashion merchandising management.
