The Segway Angel Island Experience, launched last year, is the first Segway tour in a California state park ( www.segwayangelisland.com ), and was the first such turnkey operation. This State Park now has one of the biggest Segway Rental operations. It was a natural fit.

"We are assisting other companies in starting their own tours with joint partnerships, which worked out well at Angel Island," Romar said. "I think it shows that anyone can make money with a Segway operation, and we have the know-how to set it up and promote it."

Building Segway fleets for police departments, cruise lines and government agencies, offering training and technical support services, and providing rentals to corporations including HP, LG and Nintendo puts Segway of Oakland in a natural position to move into a consultancy role, he added.

"Keeping a small percentage of a start-up business allows us to promote it through our network of contacts, most importantly www.segway.com (the Segway manufacturer's website) and many others," Steinberg said. "Our combined websites get a lot of traffic, and we keep it as a Segway-authorized tour which opens the door to a lot more promotion."
