Agency founder, Phil Colon issues statement commenting on the Barack Obama Brand and what the President-Elect's victory can teach us.

New York, New York (PRWEB) November 11, 2008 -- Phil Colón, Founder and CEO of Project 2050 (www.p2050.com) a hip, New York-based brand communications agency, issued the following statement today in response to the campaign victory of President-Elect Barack Obama as it relates to effective branding:

The New Mainstream
The New Mainstream

"Barack Obama represents a paradigm shift for branding and communications as we know it today. Tuesday's victory not only marks a seismic shift in political campaigning, but also demonstrates that effective branding can result in monumental results. In the case of Barack Obama it equated to a landslide victory! The Obama campaign was not politics as usual. The old political campaign model had little appeal to today's tech and media-savvy young voters. The secret to this new paradigm is uncovered by understanding the Obama brand itself, as it offers a glimpse into the future of branding."

Colón continues by saying "whether it be the iconic interpretation of Barack Obama's image by Shepard Fairey (founding Creative Director of Project 2050) of OBEY Giant fame, which became an overnight phenomena for the Obama campaign, or the innovative online strategy spearheaded by Chris Hughes (Facebook co-founder) and his team, or the incredible grassroots campaign orchestrated by David Plouffe and his field ambassadors, Americans showed that voting is not for politicos only but for all citizens."

Colón concludes that "Barack Obama's victory not only marks the genesis of 'new age' political campaigning, but also demonstrates that small groups of diverse citizens from different communities with like-minded ideals can mobilize to create a groundswell of voting enthusiasm and participation. As a result this DIY (do-it-yourself) generation helped champion a new communication approach that did not focus on what divides us as Americans (i.e. gender, sex, ethnicity, etc), but rather what unites us from a social, civic, moral and economic prospective. The Obama brand spoke to something deep inside the American psyche by offering the idea of 'change' and giving 'hope', the Obama brand mobilized a generation to impose their will, which in turn, helped create history.

Brands have to embrace diversity as a value, not as a crutch, and be conscious that today's young consumer marketplace is much more than a melting pot - it is a vibrant sub-culture that influences mainstream consumption in a very real and quantifiable way. Young people today are less interested in labels (Latino, Asian, African American, Anglo, etc.) instead today's generation is a true representation of "Convergence Culture" centered on common ideals, lifestyles and more importantly in helping to create a better tomorrow for everyone.
