Over 200 Patients and Families Create a Human Chain to Open A New Home for the Winthrop-University Hospital Cancer Center for Kids

The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital celebrated its move to a new home. Over 200 patients old and new along with their families gathered to form a "Life Line," or bridge, from the old location at 200 Old Country Road to the new Center at 120 Mineola Boulevard, suite 460. A heart shaped pillow with the Center's logo was passed from person to person signifying the transfer of love, caring, and compassion that are the hallmarks of the Center.

Mineola, NY (PRWEB) November 11, 2008 -- The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital celebrated its move to a new home. Over 200 patients old and new along with their families gathered to form a "Life Line," or bridge, from the old location at 200 Old Country Road to the new Center at 120 Mineola Boulevard, suite 460. A heart shaped pillow with the Center's logo was passed from person to person signifying the transfer of love, caring, and compassion that are the hallmarks of the Center.

"This was an unbelievable event," said Linda Sweeney, the practice manager for the Cancer Center. "Our mission is to treat the entire family. Some patients and families were actually kissing the pillow as they passed it.

Dr. Weinblatt Chief, Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Director, Cancer Center for Kids stated: "We are very excited about this beautiful, state-of-the-art facility where we can continue to provide exceptional care for children with cancer and blood disorders. This center will go a long way in continuing our mission of healing sick children in an environment that alleviates anxiety and fears often associated with hospitals. Each patient room is themed and beautifully painted with licensed cartoon characters, making the center warm, inviting and upbeat. The support of Winthrop-University Hospital and our patient population has been nothing short of outstanding and we look forward to the grand opening."

Peter Menges, father of a child being treated at the Center spoke of how the Cancer Center for Kids is more than just treatment it's about the care you receive, the sensitivity and compassion that the staff provides.

The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital is the largest facility for treating children with cancer and blood disorders in Nassau County. Board certified physicians and nurses, psychologist, social workers, and child life specialists provide personalized care addressing the physical, emotional, and social needs of each child and family. The center is the only pediatric cancer program in Nassau County with membership in the prestigious Children's Oncology Group (COG), whose mission is to cure and prevent childhood and adolescent cancer through cutting-edge research and national treatment protocols.
