Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada (PRWEB) December 19, 2008 -- “The electronic version of Soul Gifts: The World’s Self-Help Book (Soul Gifts) is offered free of charge during the twelve days of Christmas,” said writer Barbara J. Gill. Between December 25, 2008 and January 6, 2009 the book can be downloaded in PDF at www.shandarrah.com. The companion book, Soul Rubbing Exercises: A Personal Vision Quest, will also be available. January 6 is known as The Epiphany. This date is celebrated by Christians and Orthodox Jews as the last of the twelve days of Christmas and is part of the introduction of Soul Gifts.

Soul Gifts offers hope in the face of a global recession and ongoing conflict. The book outlines a simple philosophy for living and introduces the reader to over seventy-five contributors from all walks of life. It calls on women to help the world redirect focus from materialism to initiatives that will benefit generations to come.

This chant is intended to comfort people throughout the world
The book also examines our patterns of giving and receiving. Gill states, “A glance at the celebration of Christmas is a good starting point to understand the concept of giving. Christmas, intended as a joyous birthday celebration for Jesus Christ, has become, for too many, the most stress-filled and dreaded time of the year. In fact the incidence of depression increases during the season. Why? It has been said thousands of times. Christmas has become overly commercialized. It has become about the buck and not enough about love.”

As part of the Soul Gifts project Gill wrote the lyrics for Come to Me: Shandarrah’s Chant. "This chant is intended to comfort people throughout the world," said Gill. The initial arrangement of the melody was created by Robert Tinker with Gill and played by flautist Anna Migchels. Canadian Ben McFarlane gave Gill an arrangement of the chant in early 2008 during her recovery from recurrant liposarcoma. Gill said, "The cancer I had twice is related to Agent Orange contamination. The arrangement Ben gave me soothes my soul in the face of humanity’s seemingly self-destructive ways.”

The first translation of the song was orchestrated by Montreal classical musician Carl Urquhart. His team provided Gill with the chant in Mandarin. This language is one of the world’s fasting growing and is sung by Zhuo Shi, born in China and now living in Canada. The English vocal track is sung by Tracey Forster of Kingston, Ontario. McFarlane drew on the vast library of recordings available under the creative commons license at www.freesoundproject.org contributed by project members from all around the world. The rolling surf comes from member DigifishMusic, the church bell recordings from member Dobroide, and the koto melody from member spt3125. The chant’s score and tracks can be downloaded free of charge and in perpetituity at www.shandarrah.com. Translations and arrangements are invited and will be hosted on this site.
