Two-time Emmy-winning investigative documentary journalist Alan Austin successfully forays into fiction writing with his new psychological thriller, "The Adagio: A Mystery."

"The Adagio" is set in the late-60s in Omaha, Neb., where Jack is in the midst of a steamy affair with his married costar, Louise Thompson. When her husband, Robert, finds out about their passionate liaison, he reacts in a most unusual way, inviting Jack over for dinner and giving him his prized recording of Samuel Barber's Adagio. While listening to the recording later at home, Jack is startled to hear a woman's piercing scream during the climatic chord, and becomes intrigued to trace its origin.
The ten-minute, classical string song is actually one of Austin's favorites, and was his original inspiration for the novel. "It begins softly then becomes more and more intense, finally reaching a series of chords so dense the music is almost overpowering in its beauty and intensity," Austin says of the song. "That's where the scream goes… if there ever was a scream."
Part of Jack's difficulty in tracing the haunting scream is that no one else will admit they can hear it, which creates an incredibly spooky puzzle for Jack to solve. However, Jack faces more immediate, physical problems when Louise and Robert are found dead, and Jack is suspected of murder. "The Adagio" takes readers on an action-packed, mind-bending ride as Jack flees law enforcement and takes his desperate search for the source of the scream to Carnegie Hall in New York City.
