Elgin, IL (PRWEB) March 31, 2008 -- Now, “one call does it all” speeding the process of procuring needed prescription medications and medical supplies for Passages Hospice patients and their families across Illinois, around-the-clock and seven days a week, through a contract with Jewel-Osco, part of SUPERVALU, Incorporated which has 2,450 retail grocery locations across the U.S. and 900 in-store pharmacies. Passages Hospice, based in Elgin, serves patients and families across the State of Illinois facing end-stage illnesses at home or a skilled nursing facility.
“For our in-home patients, this contract streamlines Passages’ ability to quickly pick-up and deliver Class 2 narcotics (controlled substances for pain) so that our patients can get the relief they need fast,” explained Seth Gillman, Administrator of Passages Hospice. “Prior to this contract, ordering the medications, processing payments, along with pick-up and delivery, were inefficient and time-consuming creating long waiting times, multiple phone calls, and repetitive paperwork for everyone, especially our nursing staff.
“Additionally, this contract streamlines the process for those physicians working with us. All they have to do is call the prescription in to the Jewel-Osco pharmacy near our office. No more searching for a pharmacy close to their patient’s home or skilled care facility. This one call is all we need.”
According to Gillman, the contract allows nursing staff to pick up needed medications and/or supplies at the Jewel-Osco pharmacy close to the Passages Hospice office in Elgin, or other locations, and then dispense to Passages’ patients statewide. Also, family members can go to any Jewel-Osco, identify themselves as a Passages Hospice client, select the medical supplies they need, and Passages covers the cost.
“Supervalu really worked closely with us, grasping immediately, what we needed for our staff and serving our clients,” Gillman said. “Ready access to the narcotic pain medications is crucial to the level of service we can offer to our very sick patients. Currently, hospices and home health agencies don’t contain institutional pharmacies. Most retail pharmacies are still curative-oriented and not accustomed to the needs of hospice patients. Working with Supervalu has been an incredible experience. They really are a partner in care with us in serving the needs of the dying.”
