Many school administrators, teachers and parents are in denial

(PRWEB) April 16, 2008 -- SafePlans has launched a free interactive School Security Awareness Map and blog at www.schoolsafetynews.com. The innovative map displays relevant school security-related issues and is designed to inform stakeholders on the need for improved school safety. Since April 1st, over 70 incidents (K-12 and Higher Education) have been posted. The site includes a blog that is provided to educate stakeholders on trends and best practices in school safety.

"Many school administrators, teachers and parents are in denial," says Brad Spicer, CEO of SafePlans, LLC; which provides the service at no cost. "Even though they see replays of tragedies on TV, they feel these incidents 'can't happen here.'"

SafePlans' School Security Awareness Map is provided to improve situational awareness through the posting of school safety related incidents and success stories. To protect privacy, these postings will be limited to information that is readily accessible through the media and includes topics such as school shootings, bomb threats, evacuations, severe weather, bus accidents and school safety improvements.

A schoolsafetynews.com blog is provided to analyze school safety hazards and illustrates how improved planning, training, tactics and/or technology could be implemented. "The overarching goal is to provide meaningful insight and lesions learned to help mitigate future events," Spicer said.

Realizing that the publicizing of certain information can be counter-productive to safety, posted information may intentionally lack specificity. No information posted on this site should be implemented without the collaboration with and approval of local response agencies (law enforcement, fire, EMS, health, etc.) and emergency management agencies.

Brad Spicer is the founder of SafePlans and is a nationally recognized security expert; having served as a subject matter expert for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during numerous full-scale exercises and high profile incidents such as the Station Nightclub Fire in Rhode Island. In 2000, he developed the Emergency Response Information Portal (ERIP) solution; which is a comprehensive web-based data management program for critical infrastructures. ERIP has been implemented for school districts, government facilities and private industry nationwide and was the backbone of Missouri's statewide preparedness system; which is the nation's largest state-level homeland security initiative for schools.
