2008 Presidential candidate Ron Paul and Washington State Representative Jim McDermott headline this week's PocketFives.com Podcast to discuss internet gambling legislation in Congress. In addition, there's a new #2 in the PocketFives.com Rankings.
San Jose, Costa Rica (PRWEB) April 24, 2008 -- This week, the PocketFives.com Podcast features one of the most influential Congressmen on Capitol Hill plus a lawmaker looking to extract tax revenue for the Federal Government from internet gambling. Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) just introduced HR 5767, a groundbreaking piece of legislation that would stop the Federal Government from putting the regulations of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act into place. He teamed up with a colleague from across the aisle, Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) for the bill, which could bring sweeping change to the online poker industry in the United States. He commented, "I see this as a personal responsibility issue and don't think the government should be regulating our economic lives." Congressman Paul is a 2008 Presidential candidate and represents the 14th District of Texas.
Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA) has introduced the Internet Gambling Tax Act as a companion bill that would establish a framework for the United States to be able to reap the financial benefits of internet gambling. He comments on the PocketFives.com Podcast, "Americans are gambling online today and more money is being wagered because they're gambling in an unprotected, unregulated, and largely unknown world. All the way around, it's better to be regulated." Taxing the gigantic online poker industry in the United States could mean billions of dollars for the Federal Government. Strapped for cash and facing a recession, the government could turn to the internet gambling industry for some relief. Congressman McDermott serves the 7th District of Washington State.
Turning to the PocketFives.com World Wide online poker rankings, there's a new #2 in town! Canadian Russell "rdcrsn" Carson moved up one spot to #2 this week in the PocketFives.com Rankings after placing second in the PartyPoker Friday Night $25k Guaranteed. Russell is best known for his online tournament run in January of this year, when he cashed for over $270,000 in one week, including a $141,000 paycheck in the PokerRoom $500k Guaranteed Grand Tournament XXI. Another top-ranked online tournament player, Isaac "mr. menlo" Baron may have taken a break from the online tables and moved down to #3, but only because he was busy final tabling the European Poker Tour Grand Final in Monte Carlo. Isaac's fourth place finish in that event was worth nearly a million dollars.
PocketFiver Phil "USCphildo" Collins made online poker headlines this past week with a win in the PokerStars Sunday Second Chance tournament for $48,000. Phil also had a second place finish in the PokerStars Wednesday Hundred Fifty Grand for $31,700 in early April, but his largest online score was from his outright victory in the Full Tilt $1k Monday tournament for nearly $70,000. Travis "TravestyFund" Rice, winner of the 2007 UltimateBet Aruba Poker Classic for $800,000 in October 2007, had a very impressive week; placing fourth in the UB $200k Guaranteed and 2nd in the PokerStars $100 rebuy on the very same day.
