Yonkers Partners in Education Releases Report on Public School Priorities Focus is on Parents' and Students' Top Needs

(PRWEB) May 6, 2008 -- In a report released in March 2009 by Yonkers Partners in Education, community members articulated their top educational needs. Greater college and career access topped the list followed by increased parental involvement in schools and more community information about social services for children.

The findings are based on a January education summit organized by the nonprofit group, according to the group's executive director, Wendy Nadel. The organization has launched a new series of meetings to follow up on its report, to include community-based organizations, local business representatives, the higher education community and parents.

The purpose of the Summit was to convene the community organizations and learn about who's doing what and who can bring their services in a cohesive way to the school district
"The purpose of the Summit was to convene the community organizations and learn about who's doing what and who can bring their services in a cohesive way to the school district," Nadel said. "There are many community-based organizations that have great programs and resources for children, but either they are not promoted to the public or they don't take place in schools."

The group recently held a series of meetings to discuss what services can be brought to the public schools. Nadel said that the representatives from the higher education group agreed to develop a plan for bringing workshops and tutoring to the high schools. The schedule for these community conversations can be found on the YPIE website; www.YPIE.org.
The next step after the current round of community meetings is to develop a community agenda that can be integrated into the school district in 2009.

YPIE is an education fund that works in partnership with the Yonkers Board of Education to insure that all students attending public school in Yonkers receive a high quality education that prepares them for work, college and success in life.
