Las Cruces, NM (PRWEB) May 8, 2008 -- The 2008 Riverside International Wine Competition has awarded Southwest Wines (formally known as New Mexico Wineries Inc.) an amazing four medals for the New Mexico winery in one competition. The Twenty-Seventh Annual Riverside International Wine Competition was held on May 4 in California where judges and wine industry experts evaluated 2614 wines. The 2008 Tasters Guild International Wine Judging Competition was held on May 3, featuring 200 wines from 15 countries and 30 states, while the 2008 Wine Literary awards were held on April 25 in San Francisco, Calif.

"Southwest New Mexico gets more sun than such better-known wine regions as Napa Valley, California, or Burgundy, France," Florent Lescombs, vice president of Southwest Wines (formally New Mexico Wineries, Inc.) explains, "but the cool nights and high altitude here make for gentler growing conditions."

"Of course, it's more than merely a family business," says Florent, as he makes a golden swirl in a glass of White Shiraz with the wine sparkling in the New Mexico sunlight streaming through a barrel room window. "For me," he says, "it's more of a life experience."

That life experience, spanning multiple generations of family winemakers with a rich heritage, has been rewarded handsomely in 2008 with the following International recognitions for producing superior New Mexico wines capable of competing with wines from all parts of the world.

Here are the most recent results:

2008 Riverside International Wine Competition

  • St. Clair Gewurztraminer-Gold Medal
  • St. Clair Malvasia Bianca-Silver Medal
  • St. Clair White Shiraz-Silver Medal
  • St. Clair Mourvedre-Bronze Medal

2008 Tasters Guild International Wine Judging Competition
  • D. H. Lescombs Port-Silver Medal

2008 Wine Literary Awards in San Francisco
  • 8Vina Cum Laude award Winner-D.H. Lescombs 2007 Syrah
"Receiving International Competition Awards helps bring attention to the quality of our New Mexico wines and our Winemakers quest to produce wines that highlight the quality and uniqueness of each grape varietal produced in our Vineyards," says Bill Byhower, marketing director.

Locals and tourists alike can sample and purchase any of the seven brands and multiple varietals of the winery's creations at the St. Clair Winery tasting room. With 300 to 500 visitors weekly, Lescombes says, that facility sells more wine than any other tasting room in the state---despite its somewhat off-the-beaten-track location, along Hwy. 549 east of Deming and south of I-10 in Southern New Mexico.

The wines have good distribution throughout New Mexico and may also be purchased on-line via their website or at your favorite New Mexico restaurant.
