Per capita consumption has more than doubled over the last decade, according to the Beverage Marketing Corporation. Each year, 1.5 million barrels of oil in the U.S. are used to make plastic water bottles from polyethylene terephthalate, and a very large percentage of that ends up in landfills or incinerated.
