One Girl's Journey: New Novel an Unflinching Look at What Faces Our Youth

In "A Girl Mistreated," Outskirts Press author Stephanie M. Feggins takes readers on a young African American woman's journey into adulthood as she grapples with an abusive upbringing and a string of unhealthy relationships - while somehow finding the strength to endure and emerge stronger from it.

Denver, CO and Winston-Salem, NC (PRWEB) May 27, 2008 -- Providing a remarkable window into the adolescent African American experience, a new book from author Stephanie M. Feggins takes readers through one girl's transition to into womanhood - a journey filled with abuse, heartache and, against all odds, hope.

"A Girl Mistreated," just released by Outskirts Press and now available through the author's Web site at www.outskirtspress.com/agirlmistreated, follows Alyssa, a working-class African American girl, as she enters high school and is confronted with today's stressors - love, sex, poverty and betrayal - that affect so many young people. Having survived abuse - abuse she is forced to keep locked inside her - she now looks for affection from a slew of boys. But she only ends up victimized when she discovers they don't always have her best interests at heart.

After Alyssa graduates from high school, she thinks she finds stability in college - only to have that experience yanked away from her. But when she finds herself in a serious new relationship and on her own for the first time, things are looking up. Or are they? Just where is her new beau, Gary, spending all his time? The answer could be the biggest test of Alyssa's young life.

Despite her Job-like trials, Alyssa refuses to allow them to break her, emerging a stronger and more confident woman. In her engaging, street-smart prose style, Feggins shows how seemingly small decisions made as an adolescent directly affect one's future and highlights the importance of thinking through each one.

"I hope this book will serve as a tool for young women to empower themselves, and will inspire them to continue to strive for success regardless of how bad their current situations may seem," Feggins says.

Through it all, Feggins brilliantly captures the modern youth milieu, in all its complex relationships, anxieties and rites of passages - from how today's young people ask each other to the prom, to what teens really do when their parents aren't around. It's required reading for anyone who will grow up in our menacing world, as well parents looking for an unflinching portrait of what their children will be faced with. And it just might give all of them the strength to persevere no matter what curveballs life throws.

"A Girl Mistreated" is now available through Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and the online bookstore of Outskirts Press, at outskirtspress.com/store.php.

About the Author: Stephanie M. Feggins' writing talent was noticed in high school, when she won third place in a regional poetry contest. It gained her two academic scholarship awards, which then paved the way for her to attend college at Winston-Salem State University. While Stephanie completed her bachelor's degree in Mass Communications, she served as a staff reporter for the university's campus newspaper. She has worked as a speechwriter and as a freelance journalist. "A Girl Mistreated," her first published novel, was born from a mixture of experience and perception of the young, present-day female reality.
