Dan Rather to Host The Texas Observer Molly Ivins Award Thursday; Finalists Announced

Dan Rather will host The Texas Observer "Molly Award" in Honor of the late MollyIvins. Wade Goodwyn, National Correspondent for National Public Radio will be the emcee. The program will include the presentation by Ken Bunting, Associate Publisher of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, of the inaugural MOLLY Prize and two honorable mention awards to talented journalists. A Board of Advisors composed of prominent journalists reviewed all entries and selected the competition winners.

Austin, Texas (PRWEB) June 11, 2008 -- The MOLLY National Journalism Prize, recognizing great American journalism and honoring the memory and legacy of the inimitable Molly Ivins, legendary columnist and former editor of The Texas Observer, will be presented at a dinner and reception on Thursday, June 12, 2008, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, Texas.

Dan Rather, the award winning broadcast journalist and managing editor and anchor of Dan Rather Reports on HDNet will be the keynote speaker. Wade Goodwyn, National Correspondent for National Public Radio will be the emcee.

The program will include the presentation by Ken Bunting, Associate Publisher of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, of the inaugural MOLLY Prize and two honorable mention awards to talented journalists. A Board of Advisors composed of prominent journalists reviewed all entries and selected the competition winners.

The finalists (in alphabetical order) are:

  • Katha Pollitt, The Nation, (Women's rights and the interaction of religion and politics series: "Ayatollah D'Souza," February 5, 2007; "Democracy is Hell," May 28, 2007; "David Horowitz, Feminist?" November 19, 2007; "The Atheist's Dilemma," December 3, 2007);
  • Ellen Schultz, The Wall Street Journal, ("The Debt Collector vs. The Widow," April 28-29, 2007);
  • Diane Suchetka, The Plain Dealer, ("Bernard's Story," December 9, 10, 11, and 12, 2007); and
  • Howard Witt, Chicago Tribune, (Civil rights series: "To some in Paris, sinister past is back," March 12, 2007; "$9 million award in beating case," April 21, 2007; "Racial demons rear heads," May 20, 2007; "School discipline harder on blacks." September 25, 2007).

The event will provide the best conversation in Texas.

The MOLLY National Journalism Prize, including a $5,000 cash award, was established by The Texas Observer to recognize print or online journalism of exceptional merit that focuses on civil liberties and social justice, and embodies the intelligence, deep thinking and passionate wit that marked the work of the late Molly Ivins. The honorable mention awards include $1,000 cash awards.
