He joins the firm with nearly three decades of experience, and notable projects include packing the Dead Sea Scrolls for The Library of Congress and the Magna Carta for The National Archives. Yamada has also handled pieces ranging from Benjamin Franklin's printing press to Kermit the Frog and other Jim Henson creations for the Smithsonian.

Yamada is often called upon to deliver lectures and training worldwide, with a particular expertise in best practices for traveling exhibitions. At SurroundArt, he will lend his talented hands to ongoing projects and focus on training young staff.

I know from firsthand experience that he will help SurroundArt train the next generation of the world's best art handlers.
"This is an incredible opportunity," Yamada said. "My main goal is to pass along all these years of experience and knowledge to the next generation. I've spent years coming up with materials and methodologies and techniques. I really need a fertile environment to share what I've learned and SurroundArt is the perfect destination."

With headquarters in New York and offices and warehouse space in New York and D.C., SurroundArt provides secure storage, crating, packing, transportation, fabrication, exhibition design, and installation.

The company will soon open a new, 89,000 square foot, LEED Silver certified storage facility at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The new building is part of a new Museum Resource Campus encompassing three buildings and more than 165,000 square feet of space under management. SurroundArt's Washington, D.C. facilities include storage space in both the district and near Dulles airport. Since 1998, SurroundArt has supported the most prestigious museums and galleries in the nation's capital.

"SurroundArt is extremely fortunate to bring on Rick Yamada to our team," said President Kele McComsey, who was mentored by Yamada early in his career. "I know from firsthand experience that he will help SurroundArt train the next generation of the world's best art handlers."

In previous roles, Yamada has worked with ELY, Inc., Fine Arts Express, and Artex Fine Arts Services. He has also held exhibition and handling positions with the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Office of Exhibits Central, and the National Portrait Gallery.
