"I was reading about how cotton is chemically treated and the conditions that some of these workers go through and it was something that I did not agree with," explained Willke. "The items I have on my site are pesticide-free, and I pay attention to everything that comes through my business."
Having launched in December 2008, the site itself is relatively green, in a figurative sense, but it boasts an impressive catalog for men, women and children all around.
"I wanted to have something that anybody could purchase from. These are products that should be invested in and are important to support, particularly when it comes to the health of children and individuals with sensitive skin," Willke said.
In addition to having a new site, Willke also has a corresponding blog in www.OrganicCottonClothingBlog.com. According to Willke, there will be posts about the process of how to "go green," as well as reviews of organic and environmentally-friendly items.
As the site heads towards its first month as a full-realized business, Willke has plans to expand to include other items such as reusable shopping bags and to branch out with other environmentally sound organizations ("I'd like to link up with other sites and businesses and help each other out," she said).
Yet at the end of the day, this independent business owner recognizes that she may have an uphill battle, but the result of her hard work is much more of a success than most will realize.
"This company is fully owned by a woman, it's a new business and we specialize in something that will help the health of people and the planet," Willke said. "I think of this beyond just being a website; it's an investment in clean living."
