One of the highlights in 2008 was that PokerStars set Guinness World Record for largest online poker tournament ever. PokerStars in the biggest online poker room now and it also accepts US poker players. 35,000 entrants tried their luck in the $10+$1 buy-in tournament and the winners were as follows:

Despite of the fact that many players joined, the final table was reached in less than three hours.
Another highlight this year was the ECOOP III (European Championship of Online Poker). The ECOOP has continued to grow since its launch December 2007. The prizes were $2.5 million at the ECOOP I and $3.6 million at the ECOOP II which was held in May.
There were also poker scandals in 2008. One of the most recent scandals was the incorrect awarding of a pot at Ultimate Bet. A player called DOUBLEBALLER and Phil Hellmuth played at this poker room. DOUBLEBALLER won the pot but got disconnected. The new CEREUS software automatically gave the pot to Hellmuth. After a few days the company said that the software error will be fixed soon.
2008 is over and now we know who the big winners were last year. The biggest winner is Phil Ivey with over $7, 5 million in winnings on Full Tilt Poker. Other winners include Phil 'OMGClayAitken' Galfond (just under $7 million) and Thomas 'Durrrr' Dwan (over $5 million).
The big loser of the year is claimed to be the billionaire Guy Laliberte with over $17 million that has been lost and another $25 million which was lost in 2007.
The UK gaming company named Circus Casino said they are trying to add poker as an Olympic game, as an exhibition sport to be exactly. This may not happen soon and we ask ourselves is poker really a sport? Well it's like dart. It's a sport but on the other hand it is no sport. We should support this idea and try to legitimize poker as a game of skill as long as we have the change to do it.
