On February 14, 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter due to risk of contamination with the salmonella bacterium that causes illness. Symptoms of the illness include fever, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and dehydration. In people with weak immune systems, salmonella can cause life-threatening infections.
As a result of the CDC study, ConAgra, the maker of the contaminated peanut butter, is recalling all jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter beginning with the product code 2111.
