On an Edmonton Vacation, Visitors Enjoy A Wide Variety of Dining, Theatre, Opera, Ballet, and Art Galleries

Edmonton, AB (PRWEB) January 8, 2008 -- Edmonton Festival City, home to the world's largest entertainment and shopping centre, now occupies a new position among Canadian destinations as the 2007 Cultural Capital. From the Alberta Ballet, celebrating its 41st anniversary season this year, to the Edmonton Opera, Edmonton's cultural offerings are at the forefront of the offerings in Canada.

Edmonton Tourism assists visitors in planning cultural family vacations with a comprehensive Calendar of Events highlighting many things to see and do, as well as information about Edmonton hotels and dining in different areas of the city. Many visitors planning a cultural Edmonton getaway choose to stay near the Edmonton Downtown Arts District, which features many of the city's most popular activities.

The Downtown Arts District includes the Francis Winspear Centre for Music, where the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra performs; the Citadel Theatre; the Art Gallery of Alberta; City Hall, which houses its own collection of Alberta art; the Shaw Conference Centre for Edmonton meetings, conventions, and trade shows; and the Metro Cinema with year-round screenings of classic, documentary, and alternative films. This season the events range from performances of HMS Pinafore at the Edmonton Opera to the colossal production of Mozart's Requiem featuring the first collaboration between Edmonton Opera and Alberta Ballet to Beauty and the Beast at the Citadel Theatre, ideal for the Alberta family vacation with a bit of culture.

In addition to the Downtown Arts District, an Edmonton getaway might include a visit to the Theatre District in Historic Old Strathcona. This collection of eight theatres includes Catalyst Theatre and their award winning production of Frankenstein, plus TheatreSports, the weekly insane improv show that draws sell-out houses to the New Varscona Theatre weekly.

With over 60 art galleries, Edmonton is an art collector's paradise. The Art Gallery of Alberta serves as one of Canada's renowned contemporary art venues, while the 124 St. Area features galleries galore as well as a Gallery Walk; the first of its kind in Canada.

Greater Edmonton is home to a wide dining selection with more than 3,500 ethnically diverse restaurants with some featuring menus highlighting regional cuisine.

Edmonton Tourism, a division of Edmonton Economic Development Corp., markets Greater Edmonton as a preferred destination for leisure travel, business travel and film production. Edmonton--named Canada's Cultural Capital for 2007--is Alberta's top tourism destination for in-province and other-province visitors, and Alberta's top metropolitan destination for U.S. visitors.
