(PRWEB) April 29, 2008 -- As the Egyptian regime is confronted by an unprecedented series of strikes, demonstrations, and riots, an extremely timely new book argues that the country is about to witness a popular revolution.

Inside Egypt: The Land of the Pharaohs on the Brink of a Revolution by John R. Bradley, published today in the United States by Palgrave Macmillan, has been called by Kirkus Reviews "a blistering overview of what it's like to live in this autocratic, hopelessly corrupt society ... terrifically well told and extremely sobering", while Library Journal described the book as "a devastating critique of the current Egyptian dictatorial government."

A general strike took place in Egypt on April 6, and in the ensuing riots three Egyptians were killed and hundreds were injured. Another general strike is set for May 4 -- the 80th birthday of President Hosni Mubarak.

Bradley's book looks set to frame the debate about Egypt in the United States as the country enters a period of social and political instability. Inside Egypt has already been the subject of full-page features in Al-Masry Al-Youm and Al-Dustour, two of Egypt's main independent newspapers, and another independent Egyptian newspaper, Al-Badil, is set to run a full-page review.

Bradley's previous book, Saudi Arabia Exposed: Inside a Kingdom in Crisis (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005), was the most widely reviewed and critically acclaimed book on the kingdom published in years. He promoted the book on Fox News, CNN, the BBC, NPR, PBS, and C-Span.

The New York Times called Saudi Arabia Exposed "highly informed, temperate and understanding", while Newsweek hailed it as "a thoughtful, incisive portrait of a fractured nation... a remarkable volume." In a review-essay the editor of United Press International declared: "Bradley gives the insights of a Saudi insider who knows and loves the country, and one who is also a Western journalist; he is someone who knows how the game is played on both sides, as very few Westerners do." The Nation noted that "Bradley uses a graceful journalist's pen to write with scholarly authority and shows a sensitivity rare for a Westerner, reaching directly to the society's core."

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR Inside Egypt:

"Inside Egypt is an original, angry, brilliant, subtle, and highly readable exposé of contemporary Egyptian politics and society." -- PETER BERGEN, author of Holy War Inc and The Osama bin Laden I Know

"Egypt is the next domino to fall and, as they say, so goes Egypt so goes the Middle East. John R. Bradley hits the nail on the head, explaining why a pillar of American dominance in that part of the world is about to crumble." -- ROBERT BAER, author of See No Evil and Sleeping with the Devil

"John R. Bradley says that Egyptians love their country but hate their regime. So does he -- and, after reading this scathing, heartbreaking, beautifully written report from the front lines, so will you." -- GIDEON ROSE, managing editor of Foreign Affairs

"John R. Bradley is a writer looking for the truth in Arab countries ruled by dictators. His writing is brave and essential to our understanding of the reality behind the official, artificial image of our societies." -- ALAA AL-ASWANY, Egyptian author of the international bestselling novel The Yacoubian Building
