Non-profit offers $1 million bounty for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) biomarker
Boston, Mass. (PRWEB) May 15, 2007 -- Prize4Life, Inc. a nonprofit organization founded to accelerate Lou Gehrig's disease research, announced today the winners of five $15,000 prizes for the best ideas in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) biomarker discovery. Prize4Life launched this $75,000 idea competition in partnership with InnoCentive, an online crowdsourcing company, as a part of a $1 million contest to identify a biomarker for ALS. The discovery of a biomarker, an indicator used to measure the effects of a treatment, is critical to advancing ALS therapy development.
Scientists and researchers from around the world submitted over 45 proposals to Prize4Life via the InnoCentive web site. These ideas were reviewed and judged by the Prize4Life Scientific Advisory Board. Prize4Life Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Nicole Szlezak commented, “We are extremely excited about the novel approaches to ALS submitted by outstanding people from very diverse backgrounds.” The winners are:
Dr. Harvey Arbesman, MD, MS, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York. Dr. Arbesman is a Dermatologist in a private practice and founder/CEO of ArbesIdeas, Inc. a healthcare related research and development company. www.buffalo.edu and www.arbesideas.com
Dr. Anatoly Chernyshev, University of Iowa, Iowa. Dr. Chernyshev is a Postdoctoral researcher in the Chemistry Department of the University of Iowa. www.uiowa.edu
David Fineman (CEO) and Dr. Patricia Fanara, PhD of the KineMed Corporation in California. KineMed is a company that works in the area of pathway-based drug discovery and translational medicine. www.kinemed.com
Dr. Giorgia Sgargetta, PhD of Italy. Ms. Sgargetta has won several InnoCentive challenges in different fields. She has never previously researched ALS.
Anonymous solver in Europe.
Participating in the idea contest is not a necessary prerequisite to compete in the $1 million biomarker challenge. Researchers and scientists interested in offering a solution for the $1 million biomarker challenge must register on InnoCentive’s web site www.innocentive.com.
