The celebrated Sagamore New York golf course was designed by Donald Ross, America's first great golf course designer, whose masterful designs earned him the moniker "the patron saint of golf architecture." It debuted in 1928 and ushered in a new era of golf course design. Prior to Ross, golf courses were viewed more as feats of engineering than works of art. Ross took a different view, believing in designing courses with wide fairways, crowned greens and subtle contours formed from the existing lay of the land. He didn't believe in gimmicks, favoring a classic simplicity that honored the natural environment while challenging players at every skill level. When the18-hole, par-70 Sagamore Golf Course debuted, Ross's signature design elements, such as hog-backed greens, cross bunkering and deep green-side bunkers, became the standard for golf courses in America. The New York golf course was immediately hailed one of the best in the world.
His accomplishment remains extraordinary. Nearly 80 years later, The Sagamore's course continues to garner awards and accolades, including being honored by Golf magazine as a "Silver Medal Resort" and rated a "Top U.S. Resort Course" by Condé Nast Traveler. In addition, the course has been rated the "Fifth Best Public Course in New York State" by Golf Digest and Corporate and Incentive Travel named it one of its "Greens of Distinction." The Sagamore Golf Course has hosted the USGA Senior Open Qualifier, the USGA Mid-Am Qualifier for the Northeast region, and held many sectional championship events and tournaments with the Northeast New York Section of the PGA
In 1985 the New York golf course was completely restored using Ross's original blueprints. Tom Smack, The Sagamore Golf Club's director of golf and head professional, oversaw the $75 million restoration, which included reconditioning the course and adding a state-of-the-art irrigation system.
One part of its appeal is its extraordinary location. The Sagamore Golf Course is set on a ridge two and a half miles from the hotel overlooking Lake George and the Adirondack Mountains with stunning views from every hole. Each hole of the New York golf course is routed naturally through an upland meadow and the Adirondack woods, presenting a unique challenge to the golfer. Lush fairways are narrow and lined with hardwoods, while deep bunkers surround undulating greens. Ross's signature touch, heather from his native Scotland, is a beautiful accent on the rolling mountain terrain.
From the elevated first tee, golfers have an awe-inspiring view of Lake George and the Adirondack peaks.
