In a reversal of the trend towards licensing standards, OAGi adopts new bylaws to ensure free access to their standards.

Marietta, GA (PRWEB) June 6, 2007 -- Today the Open Applications Group, Inc. announced that by a unanimous vote, the OAGi Policy Board has amended the bylaws of the OAGi to explicitly state that the standards they issue will remain open and free to obtain. Adjusting this policy in the future will require a unanimous vote by the Policy Board and a two thirds vote by the membership, thus ensuring that the needs of the OAGi community will be listened to in an open, transparent process.

With several other standards organizations moving toward a fee based model that impacts many users, we wanted to reinforce the importance of open standards as a principle.
“Our Policy Board felt it was important to ensure free, unobstructed access to the standards that the OAGi builds,” said David Connelly, CEO of the Open Applications Group. “With several other standards organizations moving toward a fee based model that impacts many users, we wanted to reinforce the importance of open standards as a principle.”

“As more customers look to open standards based solutions to help drive business and simplify interoperability, the OAGi Policy Board's decision to ensure free access to their standards will benefit customers significantly both now and in the future," said Ralph Hertlein, executive member of the OAGi Policy Board and IBM representative.

In addition to the changes to preserve open standards, the Policy Board adjusted the OAGi membership fees and categories to better facilitate the creation of Industry Councils. Each council will be chartered by the OAGi Policy Board, allowing more industries to build their standards based on the OAGIS horizontal platform, which includes core component technology from UN/CEFACT.

The Policy Board also approved the formation of a Partnership Council. This special chartered council will enable enhanced collaboration with standards organizations such as HR-XML, AIAG, and STAR who have already adopted base OAGIS. The Partnership Council will also provide a vehicle to foster better collaboration with other standards organizations.

These developments are designed to enable OAGi to better serve it members, users, and the growing number of standards and industry groups who use OAGIS technology.
