Paul Caprio, Director of Family-PAC Federal an Illinois pro-family organization, today stated strong opposition to any F.D.A plan to allow PLAN B – an emergency contraceptive – to be sold over the counter in drugstores.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) August 2, 2006 -- Paul Caprio, Director of Family-PAC Federal an Illinois pro-family organization, today stated strong opposition to any F.D.A plan to allow PLAN B – an emergency contraceptive – to be sold over the counter in drugstores.

Paul Caprio stated, “The idea of selling emergency contraceptives without a doctor’s prescription to women…or men… of any age would create dangerous health risks for women across America. We are alarmed that the F.D.A would depend on Barr Laboratories, the pharmaceutical firm which manufactures this drug, to develop a plan to ‘safely regulate’ the distribution of Plan B.”

The idea of selling emergency contraceptives without a doctor’s prescription to women…or men… of any age would create dangerous health risks for women across America. We are alarmed that the F.D.A would depend on Barr Laboratories, the pharmaceutical firm which manufactures this drug, to develop a plan to ‘safely regulate’ the distribution of Plan B.
"Barr Laboratories has a financial interest in making this product available to as many consumers as possible not in reducing usage thru regulation. This is like asking a fox to guard the henhouse.”

Caprio continued, “The only way to properly regulate this drug is to continue to require a doctor’s prescription. The determination of whether Plan B is dangerous to an individual patient cannot be determined by a pharmaceutical company or by a drugstore. Allowing Plan B to be made available over-the-counter would allow sexual pedophiles to purchase the drug and make it available to young women who they victimize."

“Family-PAC Federal will again initiate a national grassroots campaign to prevent the F.D.A from approving yet another health care “goof” that will jeopardize the safety of many women. F.D.A recalls are too late to protect minors who have improperly obtained this drug without the approval of a physician. We need to prevent this serious lowering of women’s medical health standards now,” Caprio concluded.
