Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Winners Use Award to Support Charity and Scholarship
Great coaches mean more to a community than their rankings alone

Boston, MA (PRWEB) December 16, 2008 -- According to a recent Liberty Mutual Insurance survey, more than three quarters of Americans (79 percent) believe it is important for a college football coach to be active in his local community. In fact, when asked to put themselves in the coach's shoes, Americans ranked community involvement and that of their team above college football rankings in terms of personal achievement.
Liberty Mutual 2008 Coach of the Year
Liberty Mutual surveyed a national random sample of 1,004 adults aged 18 and older and asked them to identify their most important achievement if they were a college football coach. Surprisingly a majority of the respondents (74 percent) reported that community involvement surpassed college football rankings (57 percent). In fact, good sportsmanship by the team (90 percent), good grades by the student-athletes (89 percent) and good discipline by the players (88 percent) all were considered more important measures of achievement.

"Great coaches mean more to a community than their rankings alone," said Greg Gordon, Liberty Mutual senior vice president, Consumer Marketing. ''This year's Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award finalists represent the best of what college football has to offer - beyond the great records is a steadfast commitment to improving the communities in which they live. We're pleased to enhance these efforts by providing the winners money to continue their legacy of strong civic and academic support.''

About the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award
The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award honors coaches who display sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility and overall excellence - on and off the field. Each winner receives $50,000 from Liberty Mutual to support his favorite charities and $20,000 in scholarship funding for his school's alumni association. After this season, the total Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year charitable and scholarship contributions will reach $680,000.

College football fans can give their favorite coach the chance to support his community and alumni association by voting among the 25 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award finalists at www.CoachoftheYear.com through Dec. 22.

To ensure candidates are evaluated fairly and measured against the specific values of responsibility and integrity, a Selection Committee composed of College Football Hall of Fame players and coaches and the national media will also cast votes for the winners. Fan votes account for 20 percent of each coach's final score while the College Football Hall of Famers and national college football media account for 55 percent and 25 percent, respectively.

The 2008 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award winners will be announced on ESPN during halftime of the Music City Bowl on Dec. 31.
Fans can post their comments about the survey at CoachoftheYear.com. The site also shows a series of Coach's Corner videos featuring Archie Manning, chair of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame, and ESPN College Football Analyst Kirk Herbstreit highlighting their perspectives on the latest topics in college football.
