A recent update to the Higher Education Act of 1965 requires universities to have a plan to combat the illegal downloading of music, videos and other copyrighted works on college campus networks. The new law calls for universities to consider the use of technology-based deterrents such as bandwidth shaping and traffic monitoring technology to prevent illegal peer-to-peer file sharing. BOSTON (Business Wire EON) September 4, 2008 -- A recent update to the Higher Education Act of 1965 requires universities to have a plan to combat the illegal downloading of music, videos and other copyrighted works on college campus networks. The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) will be writing the rules to implement this legislation. The DOE will host several regional meetings over the next few months to gather input on the rule making. In the interim, universities are required to make a good faith effort to comply with the new law.
