Malibu, CA (PRWEB) October 2, 2007 -- Passages Malibu announces sponsorship of Marina Del Rey Outrigger Canoe Club, which will compete as "Team Passages," in the 2007 Moloka'i Hoe, an annual World Championship Outrigger Canoe Race in which more than 1,000 canoe paddlers from around the world are to participate. The race, beginning at 7:30am on Sunday, October 7th, marks the 55th year that participants have braved the 5-6 hour-long race across Ka'iwi Channel, a 41-mile stretch of deep, treacherous waters between Moloka'i and Oahu.

Outrigger canoe paddling is Hawaii's official state team sport, and has a history steeped in Polynesian tradition. As is customary before the dangerous crossing, the canoes, paddles, and paddlers are blessed, given great strength by ancestral and spiritual forces. The traditional outrigger canoe itself is a type of canoe supported by lateral floats known as outriggers, which are attached to one or both sides of the hull. The outrigger construction bestows greater stability to the vessel and furnishes the canoe with superior seaworthiness.

Participating crews include teams from Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand, Hawaii, California, and others from all over the world. Teams consist of nine members; six race in the boat at one time, and three people wait in the escort boat to provide breaks to teammates during the race.

Participating in Team Passages is Jeff McNairy, Administrative Director of Passages Malibu, who has been competing in outrigger canoe races in Hawaii and California for most of his life. Jeff reports, "The Moloka'i Hoe is the biggest and most prestigious outrigger event in the world. It is an honor to be a part of this event year after year. Representing Passages Addiction Cure Center is also a great honor as it is the world's foremost treatment center for curing all forms of addiction." Among his teammates is Wakapaignia, a Life Purpose Coach at Passages, who is originally from New Zealand and who has deep ancestral roots in outrigger canoeing.

Passages Malibu Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Treatment Center offers a breakthrough alcohol rehab and drug rehab treatment program, with an astonishing cure rate of 84.4%, the highest of any treatment center in the world. Passages employs a unique one-to-one program of individual therapies, providing more than 65 individual sessions per month. Each client is assigned a 12-person treatment team that discovers and heals the underlying conditions that have led to drug or alcohol abuse, at which time substance dependency ceases completely in more than 80% of clients.

Marina Del Rey Outrigger Canoe Club has a long and rich history in the ancient Polynesian tradition of outrigger canoeing. MDROCC has been based in the Marina for 40 years and is one of the two original founding clubs of KOA (Kalifornia Outrigger Association).
