SAN ANTONIO (BusinessWire EON) April 4, 2007 -- As issuers of thousands of press releases weekly, Business Wire and its web-only, social media platform EON (Enhanced Online News) are constantly quizzed about the costs of sending press releases, which start at $180 for a local distribution and go up for more extensive reach.

Some companies...can move quickly and decisively on the thorniest of topics while others can bog down on countless re-dos of the trivial and mundane.
But what does it cost to write a press release?

BWNewsImage516736.jpg One client suggested his company spends $5,000 to write a release, when staff time and legal costs are tallied, said Monika Maeckle, product champion for EON, Business Wire's Enhanced Online News suite. Several calls to agencies and companies large and small, suggest that figure is not out of line for a large, publicly traded company.

"We're curious if this is typical," said Maeckle adding, "obviously it depends on the press release, the agenda and the corporate culture of the organization." The approval process weighs heavily on PR practitioners, she said, adding that most PR people are hesitant to extricate the press release as a separate line item in an effective public relations campaign.

Responding to a blog post on the topic, John Pope of Dell, Inc., wrote: "Some companies...can move quickly and decisively on the thorniest of topics while others can bog down on countless re-dos of the trivial and mundane."

Harrison Wise of Rubenstein PR responded: "...Boiling our experiences and skills down to a writing exercise or a per release model and putting a dollar figure on it isn't going to get the client the desired results. What we bring to the table is more than press release writing but expert counsel and strategic planning."
