Eldercarelink report shows caregiving Baby Boomers are driving growth in adult day care, companion care and non-medical homecare.
Advancements in medicine are allowing Americans with chronic medical conditions to live longer lives, but, at the same time, this has also placed an unprecedented caregiving burden on the sons and daughters of this age group. These advancements coupled with the active lifestyles of the Boomer generation have created a tremendous need for such services.

ASHLAND, Massachusetts (PRWEB) July 18, 2006 -- As an increasing number of Baby Boomers find themselves caring for an aging parent, the demand for respite care alternatives is on the rise.

ElderCarelink, a national referral service that assists families in locating qualified eldercare providers, reports that the demand for respite care services including adult day care, companion care, homemaker services, and non-medical homecare has grown steadily over the past two years.

Respite care services provide caregiving sons and daughters with a temporary and much needed break from the strains of daily eldercare responsibilities. As the number of caregiving Boomers who are desperate for help grows, more are turning to respite care as a way to rest, run errands, and keep summer and family vacation plans.

“In the past two years we’ve seen an increasing number of requests for respite care services,” said Robert F. Brooks, CEO of ElderCarelink at http://www.eldercarelink.com/. “Advancements in medicine are allowing Americans with chronic medical conditions to live longer lives, but, at the same time, this has also placed an unprecedented caregiving burden on the sons and daughters of this age group. These advancements coupled with the active lifestyles of the Boomer generation have created a tremendous need for such services.”

Brooks indicated that ElderCarelink has seen steady growth in the number of families who are specifically seeking respite care services, whether to provide time for daily responsibilities or to make a weeklong vacation possible. While respite care services can often be found through community agencies or organizations, the most prevalent sources are available on a private-pay basis via in-home care, residential care facilities, and/or adult day care centers. Over 50% of ElderCarelink users are seeking some type of in home care solution and over 15% specifically indicate a desire for respite care.

Brooks said he expects this trend to continue, which should drive growth in available options for families. As cost effective solutions become more prevalent, caregivers are able to turn to respite care when faced with issues of anxiety, depression, disruptions in personal and family life, and the erosion of personal health – common consequences for full time caregivers. Also, by sustaining the active life they are accustomed to, Boomers are better able to focus on their own well-being and sustain effective care for their loved ones over the long term.
