Free On-Line Ruby on Rails Course for Web Developers

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

A free Learning Rails Online course, consisting of podcasts and screencasts is now available for web developers and web designers. Learn the basics of Ruby on Rails web development at your own pace on your own time, free.

Sebastopol, CA (PRWEB) March 30, 2008 -- An exciting combination of expert content and on-line delivery are the key components of a new, free on-line course for learning Ruby on Rails. Created by Ruby developers Michael Slater and Christopher Haupt, both former Adobe engineers, the Learning Rails Online Course presents the concepts that underlie Ruby on Rails, and provides screencasts to demonstrate building a Ruby on Rails application, starting from scratch. All the code that is used in the on-line course is published with an open-source license in a public repository.

Using an email delivery option, each participant receives a message for each lesson in sequence, spaced for optimum learning. Each lesson email also contains other relevant links, and context for the audio or video. Participants in the course can post questions and receive answers on each lesson page.

Podcasts are great for conveying concepts, but programming is about seeing and doing
Screencasts are a novel way to supplement the effectiveness of Podcasts and create a true learning environment. "Podcasts are great for conveying concepts, but programming is about seeing and doing," Slater explained. "Our screencasts are the ideal way to show people how easy it can be to build a Ruby on Rails application."

The audio podcasts that form the first part of the Free LearningRails Online Course explains why developers should learn Ruby on Rails and covers topics such as:

  • Anatomy of a Web Application
  • Rails Views -- How Rails Renders Pages
  • Rails Models
  • Rails Form Processing
  • Tools for Rails Developers
  • Testing Rails Code
-Setting Up Your Development Environment

The screencasts then step through the process of building a Ruby on Rails application from scratch.

The Free LearningRails Onllne Course is also a great introduction for the in-person, lecture and hands-on LearningRails Seminar. The next offering of this seminar, taught by Haupt and Slater, is in San Francisco on April 29 and 30. Details and registration for the seminar can be found at http://www.buildingwebapps.com/seminar.
