Six months after introducing SQL Prompt 3.0, the Red Gate development team has released an upgrade that delivers support for cross-database and distributed queries over linked servers, a five-fold increase in speed, 95 percent less memory use, and a host of improvements to the behaviors of the candidate list.

CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom (BusinessWire EON) July 31, 2007 -- Six months after introducing SQL Prompt 3.0, the Red Gate development team has released an upgrade that delivers support for cross-database and distributed queries over linked servers, a five-fold increase in speed, 95 percent less memory use, and a host of improvements to the behaviors of the candidate list.

The product does as promised, which is allowing you to type in SQL much more rapidly.
SQL Prompt is a $195 T-SQL code-completion add-in for Visual Studio, Management Studio, SSMS Express Edition and Query Analyzer. It intelligently anticipates the code candidates that SQL Server professionals need as theyre writing, enabling faster, error-free T-SQL queries.

SQL Prompt 3.5 is a major upgrade in point-release clothing, says Bart Read, the products lead developer. The previous version had some difficulties with very large databases, which made it slower loading the meta data. But thats all cleared away with this version. This one is a beast.

The most-requested new feature available in SQL Prompt 3.5 is support for cross-database and distributed queries over linked servers, which is especially beneficial for organizations with complex SQL queries that run across multiple servers.

But for SQL pros such as Joe Niland, speed rules. A real-time demo on the Red Gate web site shows SQL Prompt 3.5 saving up to 60 percent on straight typing, a savings not lost on Niland.

With a single-user license priced at $195, SQL Prompt 3.5 is definitely worth the money, especially for the speed increase it gives you, he says. The product does as promised, which is allowing you to type in SQL much more rapidly.

A prosthetic SQL brain

The SQL Prompt 3.5 candidate list has been upgraded in at least half a dozen ways, making it much cleverer according to Read. Among the improvements are foreign keys that are tracked so more appropriate code candidates can go to the head of the candidate queue.

SQL Prompt 3.5 now also supports Visual Studio 2005, making it accessible to a wider user community.

This is a fantastic time-savings tool for all those web application developers who get the default SQL guy moniker applied in the office but who actually prefer to spend as little time as possible dealing with the database, says Read. SQL Prompt 3.5 is like having your very own prosthetic SQL brain.

A demo, walkthrough, and fully functional,14-day trial download of SQL Prompt 3.5 can be found at www.red-gate.com.
